Dropped 28 sondes. Flight consisted of pattern flown over/through hurricane Earl west of St. Croix at altitudes of 33,000 ft and 37,000 ft. Center of storm was located at approximately 17 20N/59 28W. Descent to 7,000 ft was accomplished northwest of storm area to support atmospheric aerosol measurements. Planned takeoff time was delayed by 2.5 hours due to ingestion of bird into engine #4 during taxi. Engine was inspected for damage, bird debris removed, and cleared for flight in coordinated effort with Dryden Code O management and maintenance personnel. Flight diverted to Ft Lauderdale due to degrading weather forecast for St. Croix. associated with approach of hurricane Earl. |
