APR-2 STATUS FOR AUG 17 POST FLIGHT
Monday, August 16, 2010
APR-2 operated without problems for the whole flight.
3GB of raw radar data were collected, for the most part over stratiform precipitation in the remnants of TD#5, including the downward spiral performed between 1700Z and 1730Z. Sea surface roughness measurements in clear air were gathered at the time off the AQUA overpass (~1840Z).
Preliminary data analysis: Reflectivity above 40dBZ was observed in shallow convection around 1615Z and in remnants of convection embedded in portions of the stratiform system between 1750Z and 1610Z, The vast majority of the rain system did not exceed 25dBZ. In several portions of the stratiform system (e.g., 1655Z - 1710Z), the Ku-/Ka-band Dual Wavelength Ratio (DWR) exceeded 8dB in snow, indicating the presence of extremely large snowflakes.
