HIWRAP First Test Flight on Global Hawk
Friday, August 13, 2010
HIWRAP performed well for a first flight. The instrument transmitted most of the flight until the GH Ku-band telemetry went down for testing. We had some startup issues that were resolved so we are modifying the procedures from manual startup of each subsystem over the Ku-link, to autonomous startup with a safety bypass switch on the transmit and antenna scanning. The temperatures of all the HIWRAP subsystems were all reasonable except for the scanner motor so we might install larger heaters on it. The surface return was detected, but we are also modifying some of the timing parameters to improve the digital receiver performance. Good shakeout flight overall with adequate time to address any issues.
