Morning Forecast, May 11

A complicated situation remains over the region today, as the upper level trough has slowly progressed into the intermountain west. Thunderstorms developed early this morning over the Texas panhandle and have been progressing north/eastward into western OK, which was not forecast in the models. But a shortwave in the upper level flow has kicked these off and will likely propogate NE-ward.  Clouds will move in and cover our area later this morning and likely some showers/storms spreading eastward after 16/17Z. The earlier models have had a difficult time dealing with the precipitation forecasts for today, so a lot of this morning based on Nowcasting. But the 12Z should have a better handle later this morning. We expect some showers over north central OK through early afternoon. Depending if/how fast the system moves through will lead to if/when isolated stronger convection occurs later this afternoon/evening along a dryline in western OK.

Light precip will be fairly persistent across NE Colorado most of the day as the surface low spins across SE Colorado into KS.  This rain will likely become heaviest late tonight into early morning over NE CO.  With the slow progression of the cut off low/upper trough, another round of storms may develop Thursday afternoon/evening from north central OK (20%) into eastern OK (more likely). Then possible wrap around precipitation over northern OK Friday morning. Before becoming cooler and mostly clear Friday afternoon through the weekend.

Forecasts

Time of Day:
Morning
Day 0:
05/11/2011
Forecast for Day 0:

A shortwave embedded in the upper trough kicked off some storms over the TX panhandle early this morning, and continues to progress NE-ward. This will likely give a chance of showers and storms developing into central OK between 16-17Z and hopefully persisting for a few hours (18-21z). Clouds throughout will cover the region and likely keep chances of severe weather down through later this afternoon. If some warming can occur before later tonight, isolted convection is possible. The surface low will continue to spin over SE Colorado, and light precipitation over NE Colorado should persist through the day, becoming heavier later tonight. Storms may also develop in the Omaha area between 00-03z tonight.

Day 1:
05/12/2011
Forecast for Day 1:

Rain showers likely overnight into Thursday morning over NE Colorado, before tapering off before noon. The upper level trough and surface low will have slowly progressed into central Kansas by mid-day. A dryline may set up across central Oklahoma by 21Z which may help to trigger a few more storms late afternoon into the evening, more likely over eastern poritions of the state, but still a 20% chance of some rain over north central OK.

Day 2:
05/13/2011
Forecast for Day 2:

Wrap around precipitation is possible over northern OK Friday morning (12-18z) as the surface low moves into missouri. Then clearing out Friday afternoon.

Extended Outlook:

The rest of the weekend appears to remain cooler and mostly clear over the region underly NW/westerly flow aloft, sandwiched in between the southerly jet and a weak cut off low in the upper levels over the northern plains.
