ER-2 Flight Summary for 07/23/2005
Sortie Number: 05-9032
Take off: 0208
Landing: 1015
Mission Description:
The ER-2 flew a genesis mission coordinated with the NOAA 43 to monitor a vigorous tropical wave that was anticipated to develop into a tropical cyclone. The wave exhibited deep convection north of Honduras and east of Belize.
Mission Objectives:
The NASA ER-2 aircraft had clearance into Mexican air space, but the NOAA 43 did not. The objectives of the mission were to fly coordinated legs with NOAA over the water in the vicinity of the Yucatan Penisula and Belize and then to have the ER-2 monitor convective development over the Yucantan Penisula, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Mission Notes:
We had no track of the ER2 on the REVEAL system until 05 UTC so we can only guess that the ER2 and the P3 met OK east of Belize and had some coordinated legs in the extensive convective systems east of Belize and Yucatan between 0330-0430, because at 05 UTC the ER2 was already NW of Yucatan near 22 N 91 W. After the P3 left for Tampa, the ER2 went to about 19.5 N 92.4 W as suggested. Then based on satellite images we directed him to 18,2 N 90.0 W, then NNE across the apparent center to 21.5 N 87.5 W, then south to the prearranged exit point (AMIDA, 18.6 87.3). From this point we used lightning images to take him along the line of frequent lightning through about 15.5 N 85.4 W to 12.5 N 84.5 W, to 11.6 N 83.5 W then return to San Jose.
Other Mission Assets:
Ticosondes were launched.
