APR-2 Status for Sept 14 - Post Flight
Monday, September 13, 2010
This was the third flight over the pouch soon to become Karl.
APR-2 operated without major problems. A few minutes of Ka-band data were lost because of a TWTA falut.
APR-2 observed convective activity especially in the NE of the pattern, and widespread strong stratiform rain in the center and SW portions of the pattern.
Quasi real time cross-wind products showed clear sign of circulation centered at about 18.2N 84.1W at 20:33Z with strength of more than 20 kts. Successive legs of the butterfly pattern showed stronger winds (locally more than 30 kts) and significant vertical shear. A teardrop module was executed during the last S-N leg in the area immediately to the W of the estimated center, in a region of widespread stratiform precipitation surrounding convective activity.
