APR-2 Status for Sept 17 - Post Flight

Flight Date:

Tuesday, September 14, 2010

Sortie Number:
21

Instrument operated with no major problems.  A few minutes of data were lost in the process of manual supervision of the data acquisition (probable operator fatigue) and another minute of Ku-band data was lost because of one TWTA fault.

Observations for this flight include:

- extensive survey of the coastal precipitation pattern associated with Karl shortly after it made landfall north of Veracruz, Mexico.

- observations of Karl's eye, eyewall, and sheared vortex as it approached the mountain ranges (between Veracruz and the Pico de Orizaba).

- observations of convective systems in the Gulf and associated clouds during the transit legs to and from Karl.

- Quicklook imagery was available on DC-8 monitors with 1-7 min delays. Enhanced quicklook imagery was available on the DC-8 server post-leg (5-30 min post acquisition). True real time warnings for possible turbulence and general conditions of the precipitating field below the DC-8 were provided over DC-8 audio headsets.
