GCPEx Dual Polarized C-Band Doppler Radar King City dataset published

GHRC published the GPM Ground Validation Dual Polarized C-Band Doppler Radar King City GCPEx dataset. This dataset of observations from Environment Canada’s operational Doppler radar at King City, Ontario (WKR) has special RHI (Range Height Indicator) and sector scans of several dual polarization parameters and was created by the C-Band radar during the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx) in Ontario, Canada. Additionally, specially configured CARE-centric composites (Environment Canada’s Centre for Atmospheric Research Experiments) were also generated. Standard WKR IRIS (Interactive Radar Information System volume and PPI (Plan Position Indicator) scans, along with corresponding standard PPI imagery, are also included. Data was collected from January 15, 2012 through March 3, 2012.

GCPEx McGill Vertical Pointing X-Band (VertiX) Radar dataset published

GHRC published the GPM Ground Validation McGill Vertical Pointing X-Band (VertiX) Radar GCPEx dataset which collected data from January 15, 2012 to February 29, 2012 at the CARE site in Ontario, Canada as a part of the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx). The VertiX, a vertically pointing X-band radar, can detect all precipitation targets and some ice clouds. The VertiX can also measure the Doppler velocity of precipitation targets. The GPM Ground Validation McGill Vertical Pointing X-Band (VertiX) Radar GCPEx dataset is available in netCDF format.

Two guide documents for GCPEx published

GHRC published two guides from the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx). The GPM Ground Validation Environment Canada (EC) Vaisala Ceilometer GCPEx data were collected in Huronia, Canada from January 15, 2012 through March 1, 2012. The CT25K ceilometer uses pulsed diode laser LIDAR technology to derive backscatter profiles, cloud heights and vertical visibilities. It is also able to detect 3 cloud layers simultaneously. The GPM Ground Validation Environment Canada (EC) Radiometer GCPEx dataset contains retrievals of temperature, water vapor, relative humidity, liquid water profiles and surface parameters acquired by a passive microwave radiometer. Its data were collected in Ontario, Canada February 2012 through March 1, 2012. Data plots are available in the browse files.

Two GOES Imagery datasets published

GHRC published two GOES Imagery datasets: GPM Ground Validation GOES 13 Visible and Infrared Images MC3E and GPM Ground Validation GOES 13 Visible and Infrared Images GCPEx. These GOES datasets include IR3, IR4, and visiblity imagery files collected at 15 minute intervals in near real-time during the mission and were used by the Real Time Mission Monitor (RTMM). The Midlatitude Continental Convective Clouds Experiment (MC3E) took place in central Oklahoma and has files available for dates between May 6, 2011 and June 30, 2011. The GPM Cold-Season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx) occurred in Ontario, Canada, and has files available for dates between January 1, 2012 and March 13, 2012.

GCPEX McGill W-Band Radar dataset published

GHRC published the GPM Ground Validation McGill W-Band Radar GCPEx dataset collected at Environment Canada’s Centre for Atmospheric Research Experiments (CARE) in Ontario, Canada, as part of the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment from February 1, 2012 to February 29, 2012. The W-Band radar is a single antenna, 94-GHz pulsed Doppler, vertical pointing radar system. Data products from the W-Band radar include radar reflectivity, Doppler moments, and Doppler spectra of variable lengths. The W-Band radar is primarily used to research cloud properties. The GPM Ground Validation McGill W-Band Radar GCPEx dataset is available in netCDF format.

MC3E ENTLN dataset published

GHRC has published the GPM Ground Validation Earth Networks Total Lightning Network (ENTLN) MC3E dataset. The Earth Networks Total Lightning Network (ENTLN) is an integrated in-cloud (IC) lightning and cloud-to-ground (CG) detection network deployed on a global basis capable of detecting long range in-cloud lightning at high efficiencies critical for the advanced prediction of severe weather phenomena. This dataset consists of a subset of data for the period of the Midlatitude Continental Convective Clouds Experiment (MC3E), 1 April 2011 - 15 June 2011.

IFloodS APU dataset published

GHRC published the GPM Ground Validation Autonomous Parsivel Unit (APU) IFloodS dataset, collected from several sites in eastern Iowa during the spring of 2013. The APU dataset for the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) Field Experiment provides precipitation data including precipitation drop size, counts, and distribution. The APU is an optical disdrometer based on single particle extinction that measures particle size and fall velocity. This APU consists of the Parsivel, which was developed by OTT in Germany, and its support systems, which were designed and built by the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Two GPM D3R datasets published this week

GHRC has published two GPM Ground Validation Dual-frequency Dual-polarized Dopper Radar (D3R) datasets, for the GCPEX (January and February 2012) and IFloodS (May-June 2013) campaigns. The D3R is a fully polarimetric, scanning weather radar system operating at the nominal frequencies of 13.91 GHz and 35.56 GHz covering a maximum range of 30 km. These GPM Ground Validation Dual-frequency Dual-polarized Doppler Radar (D3R) datasets are in the netCDF format. Browse images are also available in .png format.

GCPEx NCAR Cloud Microphysics Particle Probes dataset published

The Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC) released the GPM Ground Validation NCAR Cloud Microphysics Particle Probes GCPEx dataset containing data collected during the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEX) for January and February 2012. Particle size distributions and particle image data, processed by NCAR, were obtained from the 2D-C Probe, the Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP) and the High Volume Precipitation Spectrometer (HVPS-3) carried aboard the University of North Dakota (UND) Cessna Citation aircraft. A related cloud microphysics dataset, GPM Ground Validation UND Citation Cloud Microphysics GCPEx is also available.

Two snow-related GCPEX datasets released

GHRC released two snow-related datasets from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEX) in Ontario, Canada during winter 2012: Environment Canada (EC) Manual Precipitation Measurements GCPEx and Environment Canada (EC) Snow Surveys GCPEx. The manual observations were collected using a Tretyakov gauge inside a double fence intercomparison reference (DFIR) shield, which recorded precipitation amount, weight, snow water equivalent and present weather condition. The snow surveys recorded snow depth, water equivalent, density, and snow water equivalents from 2 different transects at the GCPEx sites using a snow corer and a GPS equipped snow depth probe.
