GHRC completes several guide documents related to GPM-GV field campaigns

GHRC has completed several dataset guides related to a number of GPM Ground Validation and Hurricane Science field campaigns. The GPM Ground Validation Earth Networks Total Lightning Network (ENTLN) MC3E guide details information about the integrated in-cloud (IC) and cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning detection network data, which was measured during the Midlatitude Continental Convective Clouds Experiment (MC3E), Spring 2011.  Other dataset guides now available include the GPM Ground Validation NCAR Cloud Microphysics Particle Probes for MC3E and GCPEX (GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment), which provides information about particle size distributions and particle images collected by the 2D-C, Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP) and High Volume Precipitation Spectrometer (HVPS-3) instruments; and the GPM Ground Validation NEXRAD MC3E datasets (sites : KGLD, KICT, KINX, KTLX, KTWX and KVNX).  GHRC also published the guide for the GPM Ground Validation NASA S-Band Dual Polarimetric (NPOL) Doppler Radar IFloodS dataset. The Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) took place April through June 2013 near Traer, Iowa.  The MIPS Microwave Profiling Radiometer guide documents measurements from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Mobile Integrated Profiling System (MIPS).   Providing temperature, water vapor, liquid water and cloud base temperature measurements, instruments gathering this data include a 915 MHz Doppler profiler, LIDAR ceilometer, 12 channel microwave profiling radiometer, Doppler SODAR, Radio Acoustic Sounding System (RASS), Field Mills, and surface observing station.

Two GCPEx dataset guide documents published

GHRC published two GPM Ground Validation guides for its GCPEx campaign datasets: the GPM Ground Validation Dual Polarized C-Band Doppler Radar King City GCPEx and the GPM Ground Validation Advanced Microwave Radiometer Rain Identification (ADMIRARI) GCPEx. The GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx) took place in Ontario, Canada from January through March 2012. The Dual Polarized C-Band Doppler Radar King City dataset has special RHI and sector scans of several dual polarization parameters created by the C-Band radar. Additionally, specially configured CARE-centric composites were also generated. Standard WKR IRIS volume and PPI scans, along with corresponding standard PPI imagery, are also included. The Advanced Microwave Radiometer Rain Identification (ADMIRARI) dataset measures brightness temperatures at three frequencies (10.7, 21.0 and 36.5 GHz) and at two polarized planes (H & V). The ADMIRARI is a scanning radiometer like its auxiliary active instruments, i.e., Micro rain radar and cloud lidar which provide reflectivity profiles and cloud base altitude at the same scanning angle as the radiometer. The radiometer retrieval typically provides rain/cloud liquid water path (LWP) and integrated water vapor, and for low water content cases it provides the total LWP and integrated water vapor. GPM-GV Field Campaigns

GPM-GV

The NASA Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM) Ground Validation (GV) program, as a member of the broader NASA Precipitation Measurement Mission, is providing ground and airborne precipitation datasets supporting physical validation of satellite-based precipitation retrieval algorithms. The GHRC is working with the GPM-GV Science Manager to support these GPM GV physical process studies, which rely on targeted field observations lasting roughly six weeks for intensive observation periods.
