GCPEx Dual Polarization Radiometer dataset released

GHRC has released the GPM Ground Validation Dual Polarization Radiometer GCPEx dataset. This dataset provides brightness temperature measurements at frequencies of 90 GHz (not polarized) and 150 GHz (HV-polarized) from the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx) which occurred in Ontario, Canada, during January and February 2012. This Dual Polarization Radiometer (DPR) is sensitive to particle orientation since it observes the brightness temperature difference between the vertical and horizontal polarization channels at 150 GHz, and it is especially important for the retrievals of particle shape and orientation with polarization observations. DPR also has a high sensitivity to the supercooled liquid water in clouds due to the high-frequency window channels. Even though the netCDF data has regular scans, the browse is only shown at 30 and 150 degrees. Ancillary data is captured for the internal calibration of the instrument.

GPM Ground Validation NCAR Cloud Microphysics Particle Probes Guide released

GHRC has released a Guide supporting two similar datasets for the GCPEX and MC3E campaigns: GPM Ground Validation NCAR Cloud Microphysics Particle Probes. Both datasets provide data from three instrument probes carried aboard the University of North Dakota (UND) Cessna Citation aircraft. These probes, the 2D-C, Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP) and High Volume Precipitation Spectrometer (HVPS-3), collected particle size distributions and particle images which were processed by NCAR. Derived parameters include ice water content, liquid water content, and total number concentration. The GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx) took place in Ontario, Canada during the winter season of 2011-2012, and the Midlatitude Continental Convective Clouds Experiment (MC3E) occurred in central Oklahoma during the April-June 2011.

IFloodS NPOL dataset published

GHRC published the GPM Ground Validation NASA S-Band Dual Polarimetric (NPOL) Doppler Radar IFloodS dataset which data was collected during the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) campaign April through June 2013. The data provides Doppler velocity, precipitation rate and radar reflectivity in the Universal Radar Format (UF).

GHRC ramping up for IPHEx field campaign, hosts portal

GHRC will be supporting the GPM Ground Validation mission Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEx) which takes place in North Carolina during May and June 2014. GHRC has developed, tested and promoted code which ingests data and creates real-time browse images for the GOES -13 satellite and seven NEXRAD II stations. These images are staged in the IPHEx Portal for forecasting and other scientists’ use. GHRC is in the process of obtaining other requested ancillary datasets for the campaign.

Guide for GCPEx Doppler Radar King City dataset published

GHRC published the guide for the GPM Ground Validation Dual Polarized C-Band Doppler Radar King City GCPEx dataset. This dataset has special RHI and sector scans of several dual polarization parameters created by the C-Band radar during the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx) in Ontario, Canada. Additionally, specially configured CARE-centric composites were also generated. Standard WKR IRIS volume and PPI scans, along with corresponding standard PPI imagery, are also included. Data was collected from January 15, 2012 through March 3, 2012.

GHRC preparing for IPHEx

GHRC continues to prepare for and support the upcoming GPM Ground Validation campaign, Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology EXperiment (IPHEX), by ingesting real time ancillary data for the IPHEX portal. The intensive observation period for IPHEX will begin April 28.

GPM 2DVD dataset expanded to include additional data

The Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC) updated the GPM Ground Validation Two-Dimensional Video Disdrometer (2DVD) NSSTC dataset. Previously this data was only available for the partial year 2010. The dataset now has been extended to include parts of years 2009 and 2011, as well as additional dates for the existing year 2010. As part of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission’s Ground Validation instrumentation set, the 2DVD is used to collect data at the National Space Science Technology Center (NSSTC) in Huntsville, Alabama when not on GPM-GV experiment deployment. The 2DVD uses two high speed line scan cameras which provide continuous measurements of size distribution, shape and fall velocities of all precipitation particles and types for its data collection. The GPM-GV NSSTC datasets (Joss Waldgovel , Parsivel, 2DVD) are part of the GPM-GV Related Dataset grouping, for those datasets not associated with the major GPM-GV experiments. This group also includes the Simulated Orbits for Canadian CloudSat/CALIPSO Validation Project (C3VP) and Tropical Warm Pool - International Cloud Experiment (TWP-ICE).

GHRC develops portal and data set ingest and display for upcoming IPHEx field campaign, beginning May 1

The Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEx), fifth in a series of Global Precipitation Mission Ground Validation (GPM GV) campaigns, begins on May 1, 2014. GHRC developed and is maintaining the IPHEX Portal. This collaboration site enables science teams to upload a variety of planning materials, including daily forecast presentations, plan of the day reports, mission scientist and instrument reports. GHRC has thus far ingested and prepared for download and display on the portal a total of thirteen ancillary data sets, including data from 7 NEXRAD2 stations. Additional data sets, including PI provided products, will be ingested and exposed as they become available. The AMES Mission Tool Suite (MTS) will be used for real-time flight tracking and reporting during the Experiment. Software to ingest the flight reports from the MTS has been developed and is in the final stage of testing. These flight reports will become part of the IPHEX archive along with other published datasets.

GCPEx CARE Satellite Overpass Images dataset published

GHRC has published the GPM Ground Validation CARE Satellite Overpass Images GCPEx dataset provides satellite overpass images for the Environment Canada’s Centre for Atmospheric Research Experiments (CARE) site in Ontario, Canada, as part of the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment, January and February, 2012. The satellites tracks include the DMSP satellites numbers 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19. A list of starting overpass times per satellite and day is included.

GCPEx ADMIRARI dataset published

GHRC published the GPM Ground Validation Advanced Microwave Radiometer Rain Identification (ADMIRARI) GCPEx dataset which measures brightness temperatures at three frequencies (10.7, 21.0 and 36.5 GHz) and at two polarized planes (H & V). The ADMIRARI is a scanning radiometer like its auxiliary active instruments, i.e., Micro rain radar and cloud lidar which provide reflectivity profiles and cloud base altitude at the same scanning angle as the radiometer. The radiometer retrieval typically provides rain/cloud liquid water path (LWP) and integrated water vapor, and for low water content cases it provides the total LWP and integrated water vapor. This data was collected during the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx) located in Ontario, Canada, January 14, 2012 through February 29, 2012.
